Statement from Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin on the Sentencing of North Providence Police Chief John Whiting

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin issued the following statement regarding the sentencing of North Providence Police Chief John Whiting:

"As prosecutors and defenders of the law, it is our responsibility to apply the law evenly and to seek justice in each and every case, without fear or favor. It is then, and only then, that we can protect the confidence the public has instilled in our criminal justice system. I believe this sentence is fair and appropriate. No one is above the law; no one more so than an individual who has the tremendous responsibility of leading a police department.

"Today's sentence closes the door on a tumultuous period for the North Providence Police Department, a department that is made up of good men and women who take pride in the work they do each day to uphold the law and protect the citizens of their community. Hopefully the conclusion of this difficult chapter will enable the entire Department to continue moving forward without the dark cloud of suspicion hanging over their administration."
