Colonel Steven G. O'Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety, announces that on Friday March 8, 2013 a swearing-in ceremony will take place appointing David M. DeCesare, of Johnston, as the new Chief Sheriff for the Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs. The ceremony will take place at the Governor Frank J. Licht Judicial Complex, 7th Floor, 250 Benefit Street, Providence, Rhode Island at 12:30 p.m.
David M. DeCesare is a 24-year veteran of the Johnston Police Department, where he has served as Deputy Chief since June of 2009. He has received numerous commendations and letters of recognition to include the Johnston Police Medal of Valor and the Rhode Island American Legion Medal of Valor. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Administration of Justice from Roger Williams University and is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy.
As Chief Sheriff, he will be responsible for the daily operation, policy implementation and direction of the Sheriffs to include the custody, safety, discipline and well being of prisoners and defendants while being transported to and from the courts and other facilities, and to affect a comprehensive program of judicial security in the courts and other buildings. The Division of Sheriffs has approximately 175 employees.
