Commissioner Koller Issues Statement on Supreme Court's Affordable Care Act Ruling

Health Insurance Commissioner Christopher F. Koller issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's Affordable Care Act (ACA) ruling:

"As we continue to analyze the ruling and its implications, the following points have already emerged:

  • This is good news for Rhode Island and our efforts to improve the affordability, quality, and accessibility of health insurance. The numerous tools the ACA gives us have been preserved.
  • The ruling vindicates Rhode Island's strategy of moving aggressively and comprehensively to use the ACA's resources. Today I spoke with both Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse who offer their congratulations and gratitude for our work.
  • If you are uninsured in Rhode Island, you have better prospects than in some other states. The ruling's Medicaid interpretation may give some latitude to states seeking to resist the ACA.
The Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner looks forward to working with its partners on the Governor's Executive Committee on Health Care Reform to take full advantage of the ACA for Rhode Islanders."
