Colonel Steven G. O'Donnell, Superintendent, of the Rhode Island State Police and Commissioner of the Department Of Public Safety is requesting the assistance of the public in identifying a suspect, who threatened to assassinate a Rhode Island State Trooper.
On Friday February 8, 2013, at approximately 3:49 p.m., the Warren Police Department received a telephone call from an unidentified subject indicating that a Rhode Island State Trooper would be assassinated within the next seventy two (72) hours. The call originated from a pay phone in front of a business located at 657 Dexter Street, Central Falls, Rhode Island. The motivation for this threat comes after the Rhode Island State Police investigated a double fatal motor vehicle accident in September 2012. After a thorough investigation of the accident, it was determined that there was insufficient evidence to support the filing of criminal charges against the operator of the other vehicle involved in the accident. This operator was subsequently charged with motor vehicle violations.
When making the threat, the caller stated, "State Police Officers will be assassinated within the next seventy two (72) hours, watch your back within the next seventy two (72) hours on the border of Connecticut, watch your back. The Mexican Gangs are out to get them."
The Rhode Island State Police Major Crimes Unit aggressively investigated the threat as soon as it was received and has since exhausted all potential leads. Detectives were able to obtain video footage and still photographs of the suspect from surveillance cameras in the area of the pay phone. The video and still photographs, as well as the recording of the call is being provided to the media with the hope that someone from the public will come forward and assist in the identification of the suspect. The Rhode Island State Police takes all threats against our members seriously and will pursue all leads that are provided.
A tips line has been established and can be reached by calling 1-866-490-TIPS (8477). This tips line will be answered 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Callers may remain anonymous if they choose.
