Treasury, City Year, Capital Good Fund Talk Financial Empowerment

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo, the Capital Good Fund and City Year Rhode Island are coming together on Wednesday, August 7 to teach the newest City Year members about the importance of managing their personal finances. During their Basic Training Session, members will learn about budgeting and credit, and have the opportunity to sign-up for a free one-on-one session through the Rhode Island Financial Coaching Corps.

"By helping City Year members feel empowered to make informed, responsible financial decisions, we all benefit," Raimondo said. "In this case, there is the added benefit that they may share their financial education with some of their students."

Our corps members are committed young leaders who dedicate a year of service to the students of Providence while living off a modest stipend," says Jennie Johnson, Executive Director, City Year. "This puts them in a unique position to access the services of the Financial Coaching Corps and spread awareness in the community about this resource."

The Financial Coaching Corps empowers Rhode Islanders to take charge of their finances. The goal is to match volunteers with financial skills and know-how with people looking to learn how to make their money work for them.

City Year Rhode Island unites young leaders (ages 17-24) of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service to Providence schools. City Year corps members provide attendance coaching, mentoring, academic support in math and literacy, and high-quality after school programs to address three key early warning indicators that a student is at-risk of dropping out of school: chronic absenteeism, persistent behavior concerns, and failure in core math and literacy classes.
