Colonel Steven G. O'Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Commissioner of Public Safety, announces that last evening members of the Rhode Island State Police arrested nine (9) subjects suspected of Driving While Intoxicated, including two (2) wrong way operators. This was the result of an ongoing effort to ensure the safety of the motoring public by removing impaired operators from our roadways.
On November 1, 2013, at approximately 10:30 PM, the State Police Lincoln Woods Barracks received numerous 911 calls reporting that a gray Honda Accord was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Route 95 in the City of Providence. A few minutes later additional 911 calls were received reporting that there was head-on crash on Route 195 west on the IWAY bridge involving four (4) vehicles.
Once Troopers arrived on scene, they observed that one (1) of the vehicles involved in the head on crash matched the description of the vehicle that had reportedly been traveling the wrong way on Route 95 minutes earlier. Four (4) persons were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, including the operator of the vehicle that caused the crash, who was identified as Lindsay Roberts age 28 of 20 Watson Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts. While interacting with Ms. Roberts, Troopers noted various indicators consistent with intoxication. Roberts consented to providing blood samples at Rhode Island Hospital. The results of these tests are pending examination by the Rhode Island Department of Health. Ms. Roberts was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Liquor and/or Drugs.
On November 2, 2013, at approximately 3:29 AM, several 911 calls were received at the Lincoln Woods Barracks reporting a second wrong way driver operating a vehicle described as a gray Ford Explorer. Callers advised that the suspect vehicle was traveling south in the northbound lanes on Route 95 in the City of Providence. Troopers were able to stop the vehicle just north of Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick. The operator was identified as Casandra Royce, age 24, of 351 Williams Street, Providence, Rhode Island. While speaking with Ms. Royce, troopers observed various indicators consistent with intoxication. Ms. Royce also failed a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was subsequently placed under arrest. Ms. Royce submitted to Breathalyzer Tests indicating a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.159 % and 0.169%.
