Reminder: Traffic Stop Data Advisory Committee seeks community input on latest research findings

The Traffic Stop Data Advisory Committee, in cooperation with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, will hold the last of three community forums next week to discuss preliminary research findings of the Highway Safety Traffic Stop Data Collection, Analysis & Reporting project.

The project, funded through a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) grant, involved the collection of race and ethnicity data for motor vehicle stops conducted by state and municipal police. The committee, in consultation with Northeastern University, analyzed the data and is now seeking community input on its findings – before issuing a final report later this month. The forum will include a short speaking program and presentation of the data, followed by a Q&A period.

WHEN: Monday, November 18, at 6 p.m. East Providence City Hall 145 Taunton Avenue, East Providence

To date, more than 150,000 records have been transmitted from the University of Rhode Island and state and local police departments. The analysis of this data, led by Northeastern University, has been guided by the cooperative efforts of several state agencies, law enforcement and community-based organizations. Traffic Stop Data Advisory Committee members include Rhode Island for Community Justice, Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights, Univocal Legislative Minority Advisory Coalition, Rhode Island State Police, Rhode Island Police Chiefs' Association, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
