Point of contact for this press release: Acting District "A" Commander, Lieutenant Robert S. Wall, (401) 545-0214

Colonel Steven G. O'Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, announces that as a result of an ongoing effort to ensure the safety of the motoring public by removing impaired operators from our roadways, a total of fifteen (15) individuals were arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor or Drugs during the Holiday period; Wednesday, November 27, 2013 through Saturday, November 30, 2013. One of these individuals was arrested early this morning after striking a State Police cruiser while Troopers were conducting a motor vehicle stop.

On December 1, 2013, at approximately 2:20 a.m., the State Police Lincoln Woods Barracks received numerous 911 calls reporting a black Ford pickup being operated erratically, traveling south on Route 95 in the City of Providence. A few minutes later, additional 911 calls were received reporting the same vehicle was traveling on Route 95 south, just north of the Jefferson Boulevard exit in the City of Warwick.

Moments later, troopers radioed the Lincoln Woods Barracks advising that their cruiser had been struck from behind while on a motor vehicle stop in the same vicinity. The vehicle that crashed into the cruiser matched the description of the previously reported erratic vehicle. The impact of the crash pushed the cruiser into the rear of the car the troopers had stopped.

The operator of the vehicle was identified as Abdiel Asmin Urizar, age 28, of 120 Harriet Street, Providence, Rhode Island. While interacting with Mr. Urizar, troopers detected various indicators consistent with intoxication. Mr. Urizar was placed under arrest and transported to the State Police Lincoln Woods Barracks where he consented to a breathalyzer test. The results of this test indicated that Mr. Urizar had a blood alcohol content of .083%.

Mr. Urizar was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Liquor and/or Drugs as well as various other motor vehicle violations including Failure to Move Over for Emergency Vehicles. He was held overnight and arraigned by a Justice of the Peace before being released on personal recognizance.

The two troopers who were seated inside the vehicle when it was struck were transported to Rhode Island Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released. No injuries were sustained by the other drivers involved. The cruiser was towed from the scene due to extensive damage.
