The Ethics Commission held its 5th meeting of 2014 on March 25, 2014.

The Commission took the following actions:

Issued Advisory Opinion 2014-7 to Robert Crowe, a member of the Coventry Zoning Board of Review ("Zoning Board"), opining that he is authorized to appear before the Zoning Board to seek a dimensional variance for a mixed-use rental property that he has owned since 2009, provided that he recuses from the Zoning Board's discussion and vote regarding his application.

Issued Advisory Opinion 2014-8 to Naomi Neville, a member of the Newport City Council, opining that the Code of Ethics did not prohibit her from participating in City Council matters involving the Newport Preservation Society, notwithstanding that a book she co-authored is sold at the Newport Preservation Society's gift shop.

Held an adjudicative hearing in the matter of In re: Stephen A. Furtado, Complaint No. NF2013-11. Following the Respondent's, a former member of the East Providence School Committee, admission that he failed to timely file a 2012 Financial Disclosure statement, the Commission unanimously found that the Respondent violated R.I. Gen. Laws 36-14-16. The Commission imposed a fine of $500. The Commission also addressed the Respondent's outstanding balance of $200 from the resolution of Complaint No. NF2011-18.

Held an adjudicative hearing in the matter of In re: Micah J. Shapiro, Complaint No. NF2013-13. The Commission unanimously found that the Respondent, a former member of the Little Compton School Committee, violated R.I. Gen. Laws 36-14-16 by failing to timely file a 2012 Financial Disclosure Statement with the Rhode Island Ethics Commission. The Commission imposed a fine of $1500.

Held an adjudicative hearing in the matter of In re: Natalia Rosa-Sosa, Complaint No. NF2013-15. The Commission unanimously found that the Respondent, a member of the Providence School Committee, violated R.I. Gen. Laws 36-14-16 by failing to file a 2012 Financial Disclosure Statement with the Rhode Island Ethics Commission. The Commission ordered the Respondent to file a 2012 Financial Disclosure Statement and imposed a fine of $1500.
