North Kingstown Man Found Guilty of 1st Degree Sexual Assault

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced that yesterday a Kent County Superior Court jury found Stephen Mulcahey (age 42), of North Kingstown, guilty of one count of first degree sexual assault. The jury returned the verdict in two and one half hours after a four-day trial presided over by Superior Court Justice Brian P. Stern.

During the course of the trial, the State proved beyond a reasonable doubt that on October 27, 2013, Mulcahey sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl. The day after the assault, the young girl reported it to trusted adults, after which they filed a complaint with the Coventry Police Department.

The defendant has been held without bail since his arrest on October 31, 2013. Sentencing is scheduled for May 15, 2015. In an unrelated case, Mulcahey is charged with possession of child pornography and awaiting trial.

Coventry Police Detective Jason Burlingame led the investigation. Special Assistant Attorney General Meghan McDonough prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of Attorney General.
