Providence Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Child Molestation

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced that Markus Acevedo, age 22, with a last known address of 187 Lenox Avenue, Providence, who was found guilty in December of two counts of first degree child molestation, was sentenced by Superior Court Justice Daniel A. Procaccini on Friday to 20 years with 12 years to serve and the remainder suspended with probation. In addition, Acevdeo must undergo sex offender counseling and must comply with the state's sex offender registration and community notification statute upon release.

During the course of the trial, the State proved that Acevedo molested a nine-year-old girl in April of 2011. The victim reported the molestation to her therapist, who in turn notified the girl's mother, who then brought the child to Hasbro Children's Hospital for examination.

"It takes great collaboration by prosecutors, doctors, advocates, and police to successfully investigate and prosecute the sexual or physical abuse of a child. The goal of all involved is to make sure the victim is safe and gets the help they need, and to put away the abuser for a long time so they cannot victimize another child," said Attorney General Kilmartin.

Cranston Detective Jean-Paul Slaughter led the investigation. Special Assistant Attorney General and Chief of the Child Abuse Unit Shannon Signore prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of the Attorney General
