Traffic Advisory Reminder: RIDOT Moving Forward to Open Next Section of New Apponaug Circulator

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is reminding motorists of the opening of an additional section of two-way traffic on the Apponaug Circulator project as it continues to transform a congested and outdated urban circulator system into a more efficient, safer and accessible facility for the City of Warwick.

These changes will relocate the main flow of traffic around Apponaug instead of directly through the heart of this historic village.

All schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

Phase II: Veterans Memorial Drive

What is happening?

Effective mid-day tomorrow, Tuesday, November 22, Veterans Memorial Drive and the new Veterans Memorial Drive Extension will be permanently changed to two-way traffic. Today, these roads only carry westbound traffic. With this change, the section of Centerville Road carrying eastbound traffic into Apponaug will close to through traffic and motorists will use the new Veterans Memorial Drive Extension instead.

Who will use it?

All motorists traveling eastbound from I-95, the Toll Gate Hospitals area and Centerville Road. Also, all motorists traveling westbound from the Greenwood area, the T.F. Green State Airport area and West Shore Road.

What roads are affected?

Veterans Memorial Drive and Veterans Memorial Drive Extension, which meet at the new roundabout at the intersection with Greenwich Avenue. Together, these roads run between the new roundabouts at:

The intersection of Route 115 (Toll Gate Road), Route 117 (Centerville Road) and Gilbane Street

The intersection of Post Road, Post Road Extension and Veterans Memorial Drive.

Motorists are reminded to yield to traffic already in the circle as they approach each roundabout. The new Veterans Memorial Drive and Veterans Memorial Drive Extension has a center median to improve safety and reduce congestion. Motorists will be able to use roundabouts to reverse direction instead of making left turns.
