Providence Man Found Guilty of Child Molestation

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced that today a Providence County Superior Court jury found Hasim Munir (age 37) of Providence, guilty of one count of first degree child molestation. The jury returned the verdict after eight hours of deliberation following a one-week trial presided over by Superior Court Justice Netti C. Vogel.

During the trial, the State proved that on or about April 11, 2015, Munir molested a 13-year-old girl known to him. The victim reported the incident to her mother, who in turn, brought the girl to Hasbro Children's Hospital for an examination.

In accordance with protocol, medical staff at Hasbro Children's Hospital contacted the Providence Police to conduct an investigation. Approximately a week and a half after the assault, a forensic interview was conducted with the victim at the Children's Advocacy Center at Day One at which detectives and a prosecutor from the Attorney General's Child Abuse Unit were present.

Providence Police Detectives Christopher Rotella and Joseph Hanley led the investigation and Special Assistant Attorneys General Shannon Signore, chief of the Child Abuse Unit, and Kaitlin Tracey prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of Attorney General.

Munir, who was out on bail, was remanded to the ACI immediately following the verdict. The Court set June 22, 2017 for sentencing.
