Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Improvements Slated for East Main Road in Portsmouth

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) today announced that Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements are slated for a 2.7 mile portion of East Main Road, from Turnpike Avenue to Boyds Lane, in Portsmouth. The project also includes a small segment of Park Avenue, from Chase Road to Norseman Drive.

Through a $9.5 million investment, $6.2 million of which covers construction costs, RIDOT will be replacing the existing curbing and sidewalks with ADA-compliant structures, improving the turnaround sections between Chase Road and East Main Road, reconfiguring the intersection of East Main Road and Park Avenue, resurfacing the roadways, adding new signing, striping and guardrail, and doing some minor drainage improvements.

During construction, which is primarily set to occur weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., motorists should not experience major delays or disruptions, as every effort is being made to alleviate inconveniences to area businesses and residents. The first activities planned for next week are the removal of sidewalks and curbing. This will be followed by drainage work. The project is scheduled for completion in Fall 2018.

All dates are weather-dependent and subject to change. To sign up for weekly updates on this or other RIDOT projects around the state, contact help@ridot.net. Visit www.dot.ri.gov or follow RIDOTnews on Facebook or Twitter for timely information on construction projects and traffic conditions.
