PROVIDENCE, RI – Lt. Governor Dan McKee released the following statement today on reports indicating Education Secretary Betsy DeVos plans to allow federal funds to be used to arm teachers:
"The idea of using federal money to arm teachers is reprehensible. It ignores the reality that improved mental health screening and counseling is one of the best ways to prevent school shootings in the long term. It would also siphon funds from essential educational resources like dropout prevention programs and improving technology. I am entirely opposed to Secretary DeVos' plan and will work with our state and federal leaders to make sure it never becomes a reality in Rhode Island."
