Traffic Advisory: RIDOT to Temporarily Close Section of India Street as Part of Gano Street Realignment Project

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) today announced the temporary closure of a portion of India Street in Providence as part of a project to realign the road and improve pedestrian and bicycle access in the area. The closure is scheduled to start July 8 and remain in place for approximately four weeks.

The closure affects the eastern end of India Street, between the entrance to Brown University's Marston Boathouse and Gano Street. Traffic will be detoured using the Gano Street extension, which connects directly to India Street. Access will be maintained to the boathouse as well as recreational fields and the playground at India Point Park. A detour map is available online at www.ridot.net/detourmaps.

The $3.2 million project includes the reconstruction of portions of India Street and Gano Street to realign the intersection of the two roads and remove a sharp curve on India Street close to Gano Street. Also as part of the project, RIDOT will extend a segment of the Blackstone River Bikeway from its current end point near Trenton Street further south, running underneath the Washington Bridge and connecting into India Point Park. This new off-road path provides an alternate to the current share-the-road route along Gano Street.

When this short section of India Street reopens, the sharp curve will be eliminated however work will continue on the project until final completion in Spring 2020.

All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.

The Gano Street project is made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs. Learn more at www.ridot.net/RhodeWorks.
