Lt. Gov. Roberts Declares "Farmers Market Week:" Will Make Weeklong Tour of Rhode Island Farmers' Markets for Buy Local RI

“Ten Markets in Seven Days” Tour for Buy Local RI Continues the Statewide Initiative to Grow Sales and Customer Base For Locally Owned Businesses

PROVIDENCE— Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts, Chair of the Small Business Advocacy Council, continues her “Main Street” tours of local businesses for the statewide initiative Buy Local RI, by visiting farmers’ markets in ten Rhode Island communities over a seven day stretch starting Wednesday, August 19th at the Aquidneck Growers’ Farmers Market in Newport.

Over the course of the Farmers’ Market Week, Lt. Gov. Roberts will visit farmers’ markets in Newport, Westerly, Warwick, Bristol, Scituate, Providence, Narragansett, East Greenwich and Wakefield. A full list of the markets and their locations is attached.

Buy Local RI launched last year with a public awareness campaign encouraging Rhode Islanders to support locally owned, independent businesses. The “Main Street” events build on existing local initiatives that highlight the opportunity and benefits of choosing to Buy Local RI.

The Buy Local RI initiative has also launched a website, www.buylocalri.org, dedicated to expanding the market for local businesses and products by connecting consumers and businesses to independent, locally owned companies. During the current initial enrollment phase of the website, Rhode Island based independent businesses are encouraged to sign up for a free listing. Once businesses have signed up, a searchable database of local businesses will be on the website to help consumers and other Rhode Island businesses “buy local.”

To register a local, independent business, go to http://www.buylocalri.org. For more information about the Buy Local RI initiative, visit the Lt. Governor’s website at http://www.ltgov.ri.gov/buylocalri/
