Convicted Murdered Victor Arciliares Sentenced to Consecutive Life Sentences Plus 40 Years for the Murder of Alfredo Barros

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin today announced that Victor Arciliares (DOB: 12/1/88) was sentenced today by Superior Court Justice Robert D. Krause to two consecutive life sentences plus 40 years for the October 30, 2010 murder of Alfredo Barros.

Arciliares was previously sentenced to life plus 45 years for the October, 2009 murder of his girlfriend, 18-year -old Dayvellis Cotto. Justice Krause ordered today's sentence to run consecutive to that sentence.

In January 2013, Arciliares was found guilty by a Providence County Superior Court jury of one count of first degree murder, discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence, discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle, assault with intent to commit murder and using a firearm while committing a crime of violence.

"In his mere 24 years, Victor Arciliares took the lives of two people and caused the destruction and devastation of their families, leaving them left to make sense of these violent and senseless acts," said Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin. "Today's sentence sends a clear and loud message that violence, especially gun violence, will not be tolerated by our system of law."

During the trial, the State proved beyond a reasonable doubt that on October 30, 2010, after a verbal altercation outside a gas station in Providence, Arciliares shot and killed Alfredo Barros while he sat in a vehicle stopped at a red light at the intersection of George and Marrin Streets in Pawtucket. The State also proved that Arciliares shot and attempted to kill the other passengers in the vehicle, but they were not seriously injured.

Pawtucket Police Detective Richard LaForest led the investigation and Special Assistant Attorneys General John Corrigan and Peter Roklan prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of Attorney General.
