Rhode Island State Police Charges Burrillville Resident with Theft of $109,000 from Training Program for Union Employees

Colonel Ann C. Assumpico, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety, announces the arrest of Christopher G. Matteson of Harrisville, RI, for allegedly stealing more than $100,000 from a training program for members of the United Nurses & Allied Professionals (UNAP/RI) Local 5098 at Rhode Island Hospital.

Christopher G. Matteson, 33, of 245 Log Road Harrisville, RI, was arrested at his home earlier today by Rhode Island State Police Detectives assigned to the Financial Crimes Unit. Mr. Matteson was charged with:

Embezzlement over $1,500 (felony)
Forgery and Counterfeiting in General
Obtaining Money Under False Pretenses (felony)
Soliciting Another to Commit a Crime

Mr. Matteson was to be arraigned at Sixth Division District Court in Providence later today.

The arrest stemmed from an investigation that began in August 2017, when representatives from UNAP/RI Local 5098 contacted the Rhode Island State Police Financial Crimes Unit, saying they suspected Mr. Matteson, the former Executive Director of the union's "Stepping Up" program, had allegedly embezzled funds from its bank accounts. The investigation showed that Mr. Matteson allegedly stole funds totaling $109,000 while serving as the Executive Director of that program from June 2016 through July 2017.

The Stepping Up program was an educational trust administered by UNAP/RI Local 5098 and Rhode Island Hospital. The program provided continuing education programs and job training for health care workers and allied professionals at Rhode Island Hospital. Union officials told Detectives that the loss of those funds resulted in the eventual collapse of the program.
