Governor and Mrs. Carcieri today announced that a watercolor entitled “Castle Hill” by Gail Armstrong, a Warwick artist, is the winner of the $1,000 prize for the best in show in this year’s “Scenes of Rhode Island” art show. The painting portrays a rocky shoreline at Castle Hill in Newport.
This painting will hang in the State House during the Carcieri Administration and the artist will assist in the preparation of a high-quality, limited edition poster to be used by the Governor and Mrs. Carcieri as gifts to non-profit organizations and visiting dignitaries.
The 37 works of art by Rhode Island residents on display in this art exhibit were chosen by a curator from over 200 works submitted for consideration. The show is at the Atrium Gallery at One Capitol Hill through the end of January. This is the second annual show organized as a cooperative effort by the Governor’s Office and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, with the prize awarded by Governor and Mrs. Carcieri.
Second prize, and $250, goes to “Washington Bridge Reflections”, by Kathleen Weber of East Providence, an oil painting depicting sailboats at rest on the Providence River below the Washington Bridge. Third prize, and $100 goes to Walter Chaney of Warwick, for his oil and alkyds painting titled “Sunset on Narragansett Bay”.

Newquist of Wakefield. “Four Seasons of Joy” is mixed technique on leather by Marilena Kali of Cranston which depicts scenes of life in Rhode Island.
