Governor Donald L. Carcieri today announced that he has nominated Rhode Island Superior Court Associate Justice Gilbert V. Indeglia to the Rhode Island Supreme Court. The nomination requires the advice and consent of the Rhode Island State Senate and House. Justice Indeglia will fill the vacancy created by the elevation of Justice Paul A. Suttell to Chief Justice.
“For the past 20 years, Justice Indeglia has rightfully earned a reputation for being one of the most conscientious, compassionate, and consistent jurists to have served on the bench. His reputation on the bench is matched by his reputation in his community, and he is considered a great civic leader, lending his time and energy to his community. His experience, intellect, respect for the our legal system, and his personal character will serve him well as an Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court,” said Governor Carcieri.
Justice Indeglia was first appointed to the Rhode Island District Court in 1989, by former Governor Edward DiPrete, and appointed to the Rhode Island Superior Court in 2000, by former Governor Lincoln C. Almond. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Indeglia worked as a practicing attorney for more than 20 years. In addition, Indeglia served as an Adjunct Professor at Roger Williams University School of Law (1999 - 2005), teaching judicial process and ethics. Indeglia was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives (1985 – 1989) where he was appointed as Deputy Minority Leader and a member of the South Kingstown Town Council (1977 – 1984) and was elected Council President in 1981.
Justice Indeglia has been a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association since 1966, where he serves on a number of judicial committees. He is active with the Rhode Island Trial Judges Association and continues to serve as a volunteer judge for the Rhode Island Mock Trial Program and co-chairs the judicial education program. He is the 2005 recipient of the Chief Justice Frank J. Williams Award for Mediation, founder of the Arts in the Courts program, and is a frequent lecturer on legal, civic and historical subjects.
Justice Indeglia is active in a number of civic organizations including the Tavern Hall Club of Kingston, the Kingston Improvement Association, the Pettaquamscutt Historical Society, South County Hospital, Friends of the Kingston Free Library, the South County Center for the Arts, and the South Kingstown Land Trust, among others.
Justice Indeglia received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Boston College (1963) and earned his Juris Doctorate from University of Michigan Law School (1966). He has continued his legal education throughout his entire career and holds certificates from the National Judicial College, the American Academy of Judicial Education, and the American Enterprise Institute - the Brooking Institute Judicial Education Program. Indeglia served in the Rhode Island National Guard (1966 – 1972). Indeglia and his wife Elizabeth reside in Kingston. The couple has two children (Bethany Indeglia and Hope O’Brien) and three grandchildren (Maggie, Grogan, and Brady O’Brien).
