RI DMV Promotes Online License and Registration Renewals Highway Message Boards Getting the Word Out

"Save Time…Renew your License & Registration Online." That's the message motorists will now see when they travel Rhode Island's roadways. Governor Lincoln Chafee today announced that the RI Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has partnered with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (DOT) to display this reminder on highway message boards throughout the Ocean State. The goal of this publicity campaign is to inform Rhode Islanders of the many convenient services now available on the DMV's website.

"Streamlining DMV services remains a top priority," stated Governor Chafee. "The online renewal process is quick and convenient and helps reduce wait times for those who must go to the DMV to complete other transactions in person."

There are approximately 750,000 licensed drivers in Rhode Island and 87,000 may be eligible to renew their licenses online this year, according to RI Department of Revenue Director Rosemary Booth Gallogly. "So far, about 6,000 Rhode Island drivers have used the online service since it became available in May and we hope to boost those numbers by spreading the word that you can do it anywhere you have access to the internet."

"Through our partnership with DOT, motorists are getting the message that it is easy to access DMV's online services from a computer or mobile devices including the iPhone, iPod Touch and Android," said DMV Administrator Anthony Silva.

To use the online license renewal service, customers must have a valid RI operator license eligible for renewal up to 45 days before its expiration date and no more than 180 days past due. A credit card and billing address are needed to complete the transaction.

To process a registration online, eligible customers will need a current vehicle registration renewal notice, a current insurance card, a credit card and billing address, and a printer connected to a computer in order to print a receipt. The confirmation will serve as proof of the registration renewal.
