Governor Chafee, Senators Reed and Whitehouse join RIDOT in rededication of Coventry's Laurel Avenue Bridge

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse will be in Coventry at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, December 3, 2012 to mark the rededication of the Laurel Avenue Bridge as the Major-General Nathanael Greene Memorial Bridge.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) reopened the span over the Pawtuxet River on November 8 following its reconstruction. The bridge was damaged from historic flooding in 2010. The opening occurred approximately three weeks ahead of schedule.

Also scheduled to be in attendance are members of the Rhode Island Historic Militia and other living historians. They will parade in formation across the bridge to open the event and conclude it with a volley of musket fire.

A reception will follow in the nearby Greene Homestead, home to the Revolutionary War hero from 1770 to 1776. Directions

To the event site: From I-95, take Exit 10 and follow Route 117 west approximately four miles into West Warwick and Coventry. Turn left onto Laurel Avenue. Cross over the new bridge and take the first left into the parking lot of Concordia Manufacturing. Please park along the side of the access road.

To the Greene Homestead: From the event site, the Homestead is a short walk. Follow Laurel Avenue away from the bridge and take the first left onto Taft Street. Follow the road as it turns right and the Homestead is on the left. On-street parking is available in the neighborhood surrounding the Homestead.
