The Newport County Grand Jury today handed up an indictment naming Lawrence Clay on one count of kidnapping of a minor, one count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, one count of possession of a controlled substance and one count of reckless driving. It is alleged that on or about Oct. 29, 2009, Clay forcibly or secretly confined and imprisoned a victim under the age of 16 years old against the victim’s will, in Middletown. It is alleged that on or about that same date, Clay had in his possession a stolen vehicle, to wit, a Nissan, which he knew or had reason to believe had been stolen or unlawfully taken. It is alleged that on or about Oct. 29, 2009, the defendant unlawfully possessed a controlled substance, to wit, heroin, and that he operated a motor vehicle recklessly so that the lives and safety of the public might be endangered. The alleged incidents relating to possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of heroin and reckless driving occurred in Newport. Newport and Middletown Police conducted the investigation. Clay, who is being held without bail at the ACI, will be arraigned in Newport County Superior Court on Feb. 11, 2010.
