Lt. Gov. Roberts to Oppose Rate Hike Requests in Testimony Before Health Insurance Advisory Council

Roberts will give testimony opposing rate hike proposals from state’s insurers for large and small group business plans

PROVIDENCE—Lt. Gov. Elizabeth H. Roberts will testify before the Health Insurance Advisory Council and oppose the rate hikes for large and small group employer plans being proposed by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, United HealthCare of New England, and Tufts Health Plan, Tuesday, February 16 at 4:30 p.m at the Department of Labor and Training in Cranston.

In rate factor filings submitted to the Office of Health Insurance Commissioner, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is requesting an average increase of 11.6% for small groups (50 employees or less), and 14.6% for large groups. United Health is seeking rate hikes of 10.6% for small and 4% for large groups, and Tufts Health Plan is requesting increases of 9.6% for small and 9.3% for large groups.

Lt. Gov. Roberts will testify at the meeting of the Health Insurance Advisory Council during the solicitation of public comment regarding health insurance rate factor filings. Public comment on the proposed rate increases will be taken at this meeting, and the Office of Health Insurance Commissioner will accept additional public comment in writing through February 22nd.
