RIDOT immediately closing right lane of I-95 South for bridge repair

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is immediately closing the right lane on I-95 South at Exit 18 (Thurbers Avenue) due to repairs needed on the Eddy Street overpass. RIDOT expects the right lane to remain closed through the afternoon commute and into the early evening hours.

With the loss of one travel lane, motorists traveling south on I-95 can expect significant delays during the afternoon rush hour. RIDOT advises motorists to seek alternate routes. Local traffic should use Route 10 to bypass this section of I-95. Through traffic may wish to use I-295 to avoid congestion.

During late winter maintenance operations today, RIDOT discovered deterioration on the Eddy Street Bridge, and is moving to repair it quickly. The nature of the repairs requires the closure of the right lane on I-95 South as well as Eddy Street Northbound over the bridge.

The closure also will affect traffic bound for I-95 south from the R.I. Hospitals area, although the on-ramp from Thurbers Avenue to I-95 South will remain open.

Motorists with questions can contact RIDOT’s Customer Service office at 401-222-2450 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additional information will be available on RIDOT’s website (www.dot.ri.gov) and its social media sites on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Blogger.
