Traffic Advisory Update: School Street exit closure in Pawtucket rescheduled in advance of inclement weather

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has rescheduled a previously planned closure of I-95 North Exit 28 (School Street) in Pawtucket. The work will now take place one day earlier, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2012.

The closure will allow for paving operations on a bridge structure that will temporarily be used for traffic on I-95 North during the construction of the new Pawtucket River Bridge. The daytime work is necessary because temperatures are too cold for paving during overnight hours.

RIDOT will establish signed detour routes using Exit 27 (Downtown) or Exit 29 (Broadway/Cottage Street). Detailed information, including detour maps, are available at RIDOT's website at www.dot.ri.gov.

The closure was rescheduled because of weather forecasts predicting rain on Thursday. Another closure may be necessary from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012, to complete additional paving work. Additional information will be available on RIDOT's website (www.dot.ri.gov) and its social media sites on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Blogger.

The bridge is being replaced through an $81 million contract with S&R Corporation/Pihl., Inc. All schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

Motorists with questions can contact RIDOT's Customer Service office at 401-222-2450 weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
