Governor Announces Credit Cards Accepted At DMV

Customers may use MasterCard, Discover & American Express

Transacting business at the RI Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) just got easier. Governor Chafee today announced that customers may now use credit cards to make payments at DMV. Until now, all transactions required payment of fees by cash or check only.

"Customers can now make quick and easy credit card payments without worrying about bringing cash or writing a check to cover their DMV transaction," noted Governor Chafee. "We're taking another step toward making coming to the DMV a more convenient and pleasant experience."

The DMV now accepts MasterCard, Discover and American Express credit cards. No debit cards are accepted. At this time, the State does not have agreements with other credit card companies. There is a minimum service fee of $1.50 per transaction. A service fee of 2.35% will be applied for each transaction $64.00 and over. The State of Rhode Island does not keep any portion of this fee. It goes to DMV's third party provider, Federal Payments.

All DMV customer service representatives have been well-trained to handle these credit card transactions and DMV Interim Administrator Carole Dwyer expects the process will go smoothly.
