Governor Chafee, Pawtucket Mayor Grebien to Host PawSox Victory Celebration for International League Champs

City Hall Event to Celebrate Team's First Governors' Cup Since 1984

Pawtucket, RI - Governor Lincoln Chafee and Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien will host a victory celebration this Thursday for the International League Champion Pawtucket Red Sox, who captured their first Governors' Cup since 1984 in a 3-0 series sweep over the Charlotte Knights last week. The PawSox will next face the Reno Aces Tuesday night in Durham, NC for the Triple-A National Championship.

The event, which is open to the public, will take place at noon in front of Pawtucket City Hall, 137 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket, RI.

"I look forward to being able to personally congratulate PawSox players, management, and coaches on capturing the Governors' Cup for the first time since 1984," Governor Chafee said. "The PawSox have delighted Rhode Island fans for four decades, and last week they once again gave the people of our state a big reason to cheer. We are proud to have the Governors' Cup back in Rhode Island, and I am proud to host this celebration with Mayor Grebien."

"The City of Pawtucket along with PawSox fans everywhere is extremely proud of what the team has been able to accomplish this season," Mayor Grebien said. "The PawSox have long been a Triple-A franchise that does everything in a Major League way, from McCoy Stadium to the community. We're pleased to co-host this event with the Governor to recognize winning the Governors' Cup Championship and look forward to everyone joining in the celebration."

Several PawSox players, Manager Arnie Beyeler, members of the coaching staff, Team President Mike Tamburro, and Paws, the team's mascot, are all expected to take part in the victory celebration in front of Pawtucket City Hall at noon. Members of the General Assembly and general officers, mayors and municipal executives from across Rhode Island, and Pawtucket community leaders are also expected to attend. A group of students representing the Pawtucket public schools will be on hand to meet Paws, the official mascot of the Pawtucket Red Sox, and see the coveted Governors' Cup in person.
