RI State Police Arrests Suspect for Embezzlement of $165,842 from University of Rhode Island Sorority

Colonel Steven G. O'Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, announces that on October 15, 2012, members of the Wickford Barracks, in collaboration with the State Police Financial Crimes Unit, arrested a subject after a lengthy investigation. On March 11, 2011, a representative from the University of Rhode Island Iota Delta House Sorority Corporation Board made a complaint to the Wickford Barracks alleging embezzlement of sorority capital funds. The investigation revealed that $165, 842 dollars was misappropriated and funneled into private accounts owned by the defendant.

A suspect was developed and was identified as Tanya McGinn, age 40, of 22 Anthony Circle, North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Ms. McGinn was the former Iota Delta House Sorority Corporation Board President from 2003 through 2009. As a result of a year-long investigation, Ms. McGinn was charged 1. Embezzlement/Fraudulent Conversion over $1,500 and 2. Obtaining Money Under False Pretense over $1,500.

Ms. McGinn appeared in Washington County Superior Court before Honorable Judge Thunberg and was released on $5,000.00 Personal Recognizance bail. She responded to the Wickford Barracks, where she was processed and is due back in court on October 29, 2012.
