Governor Chafee Signs Amended Request for Federal Disaster Declaration in the Wake of Hurricane Sandy

Amended Declaration Would Bring Assistance for Individuals to Rhode Island

Governor Lincoln Chafee announced today, Sunday, November 04, 2012, that he has formally signed a revised request to President Barack Obama for declaration of a major disaster for the State of Rhode Island.

"Through the good work of FEMA teams on the ground in Rhode Island, we now have enough assessments complete to add Individual Assistance for Newport and Washington counties to our request for federal disaster declaration. This support will help Rhode Islanders who have suffered losses in the storm and help them return to normal. I continue to be grateful for the Obama Administration's support for Rhode Island and its residents."

The Governor specifically requested Individual Assistance for Newport and Washington counties. On Friday, the Governor requested a declaration for Public Assistance for Bristol, Newport, and Washington counties, which was subsequently granted on Saturday by the President. This revised request is based on additional data collected during the assessment process. As additional information becomes available, the request may be amended – including the modification of assistance levels and the possible inclusion of further Public and Individual Assistance.

Specifically in this amendment, the Governor has requested Individual Assistance (including the Individuals and Households Program (IHP), Disaster Unemployment Assistance, Disaster Legal Service, and Crisis Counseling) and Small Business Administration disaster loans for Newport and Washington Counties.
