Advisory - Governor Chafee, Secretary of State Mollis to Honor Local Heroes for Saving Lives

WHAT: Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis will honor a group of Rhode Islanders with the 2012 State Lifesaving Medal for their heroics rescuing people from death during incidents in Providence and Newport.

* Providence Police Officer Michael Clary rushed into a burning tenement to rescue three people

* Wyatt Detention Facility Training Sgt. Donald Pina breathed life into an infant who had stopped breathing due to a seizure

* Officers of the Newport Fire Department plunged into rugged water off Brenton Point to pull a drowning swimmer to safety

State law created the State Lifesaving Medal, which recognizes the heroism of firefighters, police officers and civilians who save human life in Rhode Island. The medal is awarded annually.

WHEN AND WHERE: Wed., Nov. 14, 3 p.m., State Room, State House.

HIGHLIGHTS: See the heroes receive the State Lifesaving Medal. Hear descriptions of their lifesaving heroics. Listen to one of the people whose life was saved thank her heroes. Talk with the heroes about their courageous acts.
