All RI DMV locations accept cash, check or credit cards for payment of business transactions. DMV started accepting MasterCard, Discover and American Express cards last April and most recently added VISA credit cards to the list of acceptable forms of payment. By adding VISA, customers now have another option to make a convenient payment without worrying about bringing cash or writing a check to cover their DMV transaction.
There is a minimum service fee of $1.50 per transaction. A service fee of 2.35% will be applied for each transaction $64.00 and over. The State of Rhode Island does not keep any portion of this fee. It goes to DMV's third party provider, Federal Payments. Please note that DMV does not accept debit cards for any transaction.
