Colonel Steven G. O'Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, announces that on July 12, 2013, Troopers stopped a motorist on Route 95 in the City of Providence which led to the seizure of a loaded handgun and the arrest of the driver.
On July 12, 2013, at approximately 11:39pm, Troopers were patrolling Route 95 in the City of Providence when they encountered a vehicle exceeding the speed limit. Troopers stopped the vehicle and when speaking to the operator detected the strong order of burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The operator, as well as four additional occupants was asked to exit the vehicle for further investigation. Troopers observed a black pistol grip extending from the driver's side door storage compartment which was within reach of the operator at the time of the traffic stop. Troopers were able to safely seize a Springfield 9mm semi-automatic pistol which was fully loaded to include one round in the chamber.
The operator of the vehicle was identified as Tyrone Perry, age 22, of 67 Baldwin Street, Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Perry was placed under arrest and charged with Carrying a Pistol without a Permit which is a felony offense. Perry was also issued civil citations for Possession of Marijuana One Ounce or Less, Speeding and additional moving violations.
Perry was returned to the Lincoln Woods Barracks where he was processed and held overnight. This morning he was arraigned before a Justice of the Peace and released on $2500 Surety bail pending a future court appearance.
