DEM Reminds Medical Waste Generators to Register Online to Obtain New Identification Numbers by December 1, 2013

Medical Waste Generators Required to Register and to Report the Amount of Waste Produced and Discarded During the Calendar Year

PROVIDENCE – The Department of Environmental Management is reminding generators of medical waste that they must register online for a new MWG number for the 2014 calendar year from September 1, 2013 to December 1, 2013. The requirement is included in the Department's amended Rules and Regulations Governing the Generation, Transportation, Storage, Treatment, Management and Disposal of Regulated Medical Waste.

Beginning on January 1, 2014, medical waste transporters will be responsible for tracking Rhode Island MWG Numbers when they pick up medical waste from generators and for including MWG Numbers in their semi-annual medical waste transporter reports.

The fee structure for the online registration is based on the amount of medical waste that was generated during the previous calendar year, and ranges from $30 for less than 25 pounds to $200 for amounts greater than 2,000 pounds. To register, medical waste generators can visit https://www.ri.gov/DEM/medical_waste_generator or click on "Medical Waste Generator Registration" under Timely Topics on the DEM homepage at www.dem.ri.gov. A fact sheet on the registration process is also available on the DEM homepage under "Timely Topics."
