Members of the media and the public are cordially invited to attend the press conference.

The Rhode Island State Police and Rhode Island Police Chiefs' Association will host a press conference, "Kids, Cops, & Classrooms" on:

Thursday, August 22, 2013 3:00 p.m. State Room State House Providence, Rhode Island

The Rhode Island State Police, Rhode Island Police Chiefs' Association in conjunction with the Rhode Island Office of the Attorney General, United States Attorney's Office, federal and municipal law enforcement officers throughout the state, and Rhode Island corporate sponsors including Ocean State Job Lot, Benny's Home and Auto, CVS Caremark, W.B. Mason, Samsonite, and Walgreen's are donating backpacks and school supplies for the children who are clients of Crossroads Rhode Island, Children's Friend, Project Night Vision, the Center for Southeast Asians, and the Hispanic Ministers' Association. The school supplies are for students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. This is the fourth year that this event has been held.

Major David P. Tikoian, of the Rhode Island State Police, is spearheading this program for Rhode Island law enforcement. The law enforcement agencies have been collecting donations and will bring them to the press conference. The goal of "Kids, Cops, & Classrooms" is to help relieve the burden parents experience when they prepare their children to return to school. Due to budgetary restrictions in the state's cities and towns, families are being asked to provide more of their own school supplies as well as other supplies for use by the entire class, such as tissues, paper towels, and hand sanitizer. Another goal of this event is to show children that police officers are their friends and are in the community to help them. Rhode Island law enforcement has a history of helping families, and especially children, and also hosts a similar event during the Christmas holiday season.

In attendance at the press conference will be Colonel Steven G. O'Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police; Chief John Desmarais, of the Cumberland Police Department and President of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs' Association; Attorney General Peter Kilmartin; United States Attorney Peter Neronha; Police Chiefs and Law Enforcement Officers from the state's federal, state, and municipal police departments. Corporate sponsors Mr. David Sarlitto representing Marc and Alan Perlman, of Ocean State Job Lot; Mr. Arnold Bromberg, of Benny's Home and Auto; Ms. Faith Weiner, of CVS Caremark; Mr. Glenn Mark, of W.B. Mason, Mr. Michael Benson, of Samsonite, and Mr. Ralph Seavey, of Walgreen's.
