Rhode Island has learned that a recent security breach at JPMorgan Chase may have impacted up to 1,850 people receiving Rhode Island Unemployment Insurance, Temporary Disability Insurance and/or Child Support payments through prepaid debit cards. The security breach, which occurred between July and September 2013, may have exposed such personal information as addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth as well as card numbers, user IDs and bank account numbers.
According to JP Morgan Chase, no evidence exists at this time that any personal or account information has been used improperly. The bank is notifying impacted card holders by email today and by mail this week. As a precaution, JPMorgan Chase is offering up to one year of free credit monitoring service to those impacted by the breach.
"While we are relieved to learn that no misuse of personal information has been detected at this point, Rhode Island is concerned that it took more than two months for JPMorgan Chase to inform states of this security breach," said Department of Labor and Training Director Charles J. Fogarty. "We expect a full accounting from JPMorgan Chase about its investigation timetable as well as an explanation for the significant delay in notifying both states and cardholders."
"We are disappointed our department and those affected were not notified sooner," said said Sandra M. Powell, Director of the Department of Human Services. "We will work with JPMorgan Chase to ensure that proper notification is taking place and that follow-up services such as continued credit monitoring will be supplied by JP Morgan Chase to those affected."
