Colonel Steven G. O'Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode State Police and Commissioner of the Department of the Public Safety, announces that on March 26, 2014, Troopers arrested Ada Almonte, age 31 of 109 Bridgham Street, Providence, RI for Possession of Heroin with Intent to Deliver and Possession of Heroin (1 Ounce to 1 Kilogram).
Troopers received information from a confidential source that a female would be traveling from New York to Providence, Rhode Island for the purpose of transporting a large amount of narcotics. The confidential source provided the date and approximate time the vehicle would be arriving in Rhode Island, as well as a detailed description of the vehicle and the suspect. At approximately 5:00 PM, a trooper assigned to the Hope Valley Barracks was on patrol on Route 95 and observed a vehicle matching the description provided by the confidential source. The vehicle, described as a green passenger van with markings on the side, was stopped just south of Hopkins Hill Road in the Town of West Greenwich. Upon approaching the van, troopers noted a female matching the description seated in the rear. A search of the van was conducted, at which time a large package wrapped in cellophane was found in the side compartment directly next to the seat that was occupied by the female. The package was seized and the female was transported to the Hope Valley Barracks for further investigation.
A State Police canine examined the package which resulted in a positive alert for the presence of narcotics. The package was opened and found to contain approximately eleven (11) ounces of a brown powder substance which field tested positive for heroin. The estimated street value of this amount of heroin is $31,200. If packaged for further distribution, this quantity of heroin could produce 15,400 packets for individual sale.
The heroin was transported to the Rhode Island Department of Health, Toxicology Lab for further testing to include the detection of Fentanyl.
Almonte will be arraigned at 3rd Division District Court in Warwick at 2:30 PM today, on the charges of Possession with Intent to Deliver Heroin and Possession of Heroin (One Ounce to One Kilogram).
