Nellie Gorbea sworn in as Rhode Island's Secretary of State

Nellie M. Gorbea was sworn in today as Rhode Island's Secretary of State, becoming only the fourth woman to hold this position and the first Latino to hold statewide elected office in New England. Gorbea, who won a decisive victory in the November General Election, served as Deputy Secretary of State from 2002 to 2006. As Secretary of State, Gorbea will lead efforts to ensure fair, fast and accurate elections, provide transparency in government, and help small business thrive.

The Secretary of State is Rhode Island's third ranking elected official, following the Governor and Lt. Governor. The Secretary of State also works with every company registered to do business in the state. Laws and other official acts such as issuing bonds must be signed by the Secretary of State in order to make them official. In addition, the Secretary of State also processes, preserves and gives the public access to hundreds of thousands of historic documents and public records.

Gorbea is the former executive director of HousingWorks RI, an affordable housing advocacy group, and a long time civic activist in Rhode Island. A Rhode Islander for most of her adult life, Gorbea was born and raised in Puerto Rico and is a graduate of Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School for Public and International Affairs. She also has a master's degree in public administration from Columbia University. She is married to Steve D'Hondt and has three daughters.
