16 YEAR OLD TRAINING SCHOOL RESIDENT DIES PLAYING BASKETBALL

A 16 year old male resident of the Rhode Island Training School passed away late this afternoon while playing basketball during a routine recreational period in the facility’s gymnasium. The young man scored a basket, walked off the court and collapsed. Staff of the Training School responded immediately and performed CPR as did the paramedics who arrived within minutes. The youth was pronounced dead upon arrival at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

A preliminary review of the youth’s medical file at the Training School indicates no pre-existing medical condition or indication that the youth had not been feeling well in the recent past.

According to DCYF Director Patricia Martinez, the Department is working with the State Police and the Child Advocate in reviewing the matter. This is standard procedure when a serious incident occurs at the state’s juvenile correctional facility. Additionally, the Department will be awaiting results of the autopsy being conducted by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

“This is a sad day for all of us. Our deepest sympathy goes to the family and friends. We will be offering our help to support the family through this difficult period. Additionally, the Department’s critical incident team will be providing counseling for staff and residents”, said Director Martinez.
