Town of Bristol Receives Anonymous Gift of Mount Hope Farm Document
The Town Clerk’s Office recently received an anonymous gift of a document from 1762. The document, purchased on behalf of the Town on Ebay for approximately $300, is a bond to secure the rental agreement Bennet Munro who leased the farm from its owner Isaac Royall in 1762.
Town Clerk Louis P. Cirillo reports that the document will be held in the Town Archives and may be exhibited from time to time. It will be added to a collection of documents. Mr. Cirillo notes that the document is important to our local history since it confirms the name “Mount Hope Farm” from at least 1762 and provides an interesting example of the agreements of the period.
