"Team Gorman" Looking for Walkers and Sponsors

CRANSTON, R.I. – September 5, 2006 – Correctional Officer John Gorman, who works the 7-3 shift at the Intake Service Center, was diagnosed with brain cancer in May 2004. He underwent surgery to remove the tumor, missing a few months of work during his recovery, but has been on the job ever since. John travels to Boston’s Dana Farber Cancer Institute once a week for his treatment, which involves both chemotherapy and radiation. The Cumberland resident and father of two young children may have to continue treatment for the rest of his life. He is currently cancer-free.

Supported by RIBCO (the Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers), John will participate in a 26.2 mile walk sponsored by the Jimmy Fund in conjunction with Dana Farber on Sunday, September 17, 2006. Walkers will follow the same route as the Boston Marathon, and monies raised will go toward much needed cancer research. RIBCO paid John’s registration fee and contributed $200 out of its treasury to sponsor him. They will also provide him with pencils and badges to hand out to participants and spectators along the route.

Fellow Intake Service Center Correctional Officer Mike Porter has organized “Team Gorman.” With 22 members to date, the team will be made up of RIDOC employees and others who can commit to walking the 26.2 miles and raising at least $200 in pledges by the November 1 deadline. The goal is to have a minimum of 30 walkers and raise at least $6,000 in pledges.

Director A.T. Wall II has demonstrated his support of the endeavor by providing transport vans for “Team Gorman” and encouraging facility heads to ensure that all who wish to can participate without adversely affecting other staff or operations. “We are proud of John and the battle he has been fighting and we are happy to provide whatever support we can to this effort,” notes Director Wall. “It’s an example of the spirit of teamwork and cooperation so critical to correctional professionalism,” he continues, “and we are extremely grateful to all of our officers and other staff who plan to participate either by walking or pledging their support of a member of ‘Team Gorman.’”

Anyone interested in participating in this fun and important event is encouraged to contact Correctional Officer Mike Porter at the Intake Service Center at 462-1227.
