CRANSTON, R.I. – August 2, 2006 – A.T. Wall, II, director of the Rhode Island Department of Corrections has announced the appointment of Nancy Bailey of Glocester, R.I., as Warden within the Office of the Assistant Director of Institutions and Operations. In her new role, Bailey will oversee the Rhode Island Department of Correction’s emergency preparedness in accordance with federal and state mandates; oversee the selection and training of RIDOC’s emergency response teams; review and develop security policies, protocols, and practices within the facilities; evaluate and assess new technologies; coordinate and oversee a security audit program; and facilitate a “vulnerability assessment program” within the facilities.
Bailey’s career has been spent with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP), the largest prison system in the nation. She began in 1974 as a Correctional Officer, she climbing through the ranks, over the next 27 years. She was promoted into the positions of Correctional Programs Specialist, Assistant Administrator, Associate Warden, and ultimately Warden in numerous facilities within the federal system. Her last term as Warden, before retiring from the FBOP in 2002, was at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fort Dix, N.J., the largest facility in the entire federal system—with 700 staff, 4,300 male inmates, and a $58 million budget. For the past several years she has been consulting in the corrections field.
According to Director Wall, “Nancy thoroughly impressed the members of the interview panel and me with her knowledge of institutional management, her experience in a vast array of institutions, her intuition, and her common sense.” Bailey is a native of Rhode Island, where she has returned to live since her retirement. She holds a Master’s Degree in Sociology from West Virginia University.
