Hasim Munir Sentenced to 35 Years for Child Molestation

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced that Hasim Munir (age 37), of Providence, was sentenced yesterday by Superior Court Justice Netti C. Vogel to 35 years, with 23 years to serve and the remainder suspended with probation, for first degree child molestation. In addition, Munir was ordered to have no contact with the victim, ordered to undergo sex offender counseling and is subject to lifetime sex offender registration and community notification. Munir was found guilty in May of molesting a 13-year-old girl in 2015.

During the trial, the State proved that on or about April 11, 2015, Munir molested a 13-year-old girl known to him. The victim reported the incident to her mother, who in turn, brought the girl to Hasbro Children's Hospital for an examination.

In accordance with protocol, medical staff at Hasbro Children's Hospital contacted the Providence Police to conduct an investigation. Approximately a week and a half after the assault, a forensic interview was conducted with the victim at the Children's Advocacy Center at Day One at which detectives and a prosecutor from the Attorney General's Child Abuse Unit were present.

"By working cooperatively with police, the tremendous team at Hasbro Children's Hospital, and the specialized staff at the Child Advocacy Center, we are able to provide a safe place for child victims to feel comfortable to share their stories, allowing prosecutors to obtain critical information needed to successfully prosecute those who physically and sexually abuse children. This partnership is a model that has proven to be beneficial to victims and prosecution," said Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin.

Providence Police Detectives Christopher Rotella and Joseph Hanley led the investigation and Special Assistant Attorneys General Shannon Signore, chief of the Child Abuse Unit, and Kaitlin Tracey prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of Attorney General.
