Treasurer Magaziner to Mark Financial Literacy Month with April Events

PROVIDENCE, RI – Treasurer Magaziner will kick off a month-long series of events across the State to highlight the importance of financial literacy in Rhode Island, in recognition of Financial Literacy Month.

"Economic prosperity is directly tied to empowering ourselves and our families with financial knowledge," said Treasurer Magaziner. "Our financial system has grown increasingly complex, and the personal finance decisions we make have long-lasting consequences. Financial literacy is a tool to achieve economic security and can help protect against fraud and predatory banking practices."

During the month of April, Treasurer Magaziner will convene a meeting of the Financial Empowerment Roundtable. The Roundtable, started by Magaziner in 2017, regularly brings together stakeholders from government, non-profits, education, businesses, and banking to network and share ideas on how to expand financial empowerment in the Ocean State.

The Treasurer will also participate in financial education fairs and presentations at high schools across Rhode Island. A partial list of these events can be found below.

In 2016 Treasurer Magaziner launched the Rhode Island Financial Literacy Educator of the Year award to honor educators who lead their field in teaching financial literacy. Prior recipients, who are nominated by their peers and students, include Patricia Page of East Greenwich High School and Richard Garland of North Kingstown High School. The 2018 Financial Literacy Educator of the Year winner will be announced later this month.

Treasurer Magaziner recently served as Chair of the National Association of State Treasurers' Financial Education and Empowerment Committee. The Treasurer also received the Council for Economic Education's 2017 William A. Forbes Public Awareness Award for his work to advance financial literacy for student and families.
