Starting Sunday night, September 14, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will begin overnight construction on a mini roundabout at the intersection of Brown Street, Boston Neck Road (Route 1A) and Phillips Street in the village of Wickford. Working in coordination with the Town of North Kingstown, RIDOT scheduled construction of the roundabout to take place after the summer tourism season with the work to take place during late evening and overnight hours to minimize disruption to motorists, pedestrians and the business community. The roundabout is scheduled to be installed by the end of October.
Motorists can expect lane closures during the evening and overnight hours of 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday-Thursday nights only, as work begins on the night of September 14. All traffic patterns will be returned to normal during the daytime.
While building the roundabout, RIDOT will schedule overnight detours for a short section of Brown Street at the intersection. The detours will be in place during the same Sunday-Thursday, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. schedule. Local access to all shops, restaurants and residences will be maintained and all lanes will be open during the daytime hours. Specific lane closure information will be posted at www.ridot.net/TravelAdvisories as it is scheduled.
The Brown Street detour will direct drivers to use Phillips Street, Tower Hill Road and West Main Street to reach destinations on Brown Street.
During construction, there will be times when a truck detour will be necessary. When this occurs, trucks will be directed to use West Main Street to enter Wickford village, and any trucks coming from points south and east will be asked not to use Boston Neck Road but instead use Route 1 to Tower Hill Road to West Main Street. The date of the truck detour will be announced when scheduled.
