Starting Friday, September 25, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is scheduled to begin a series of traffic pattern changes as part of the ongoing reconstruction of the I-95/Route 10 interchange in Cranston and Providence. These changes are temporary and may require additional travel time.
A summary of the upcoming changes and expected schedules are as follows:
September 25: The beginning of the ramp from Route 10 South to I-95 North will shift approximately 100 feet from its current location, which means drivers will enter this ramp a little sooner than they do today. No changes will be made to the on-ramp to I-95 South at this location.
September 25-28: The ramp from Route 10 South to I-95 North will be closed for an extended weekend so RIDOT can perform additional construction to connect a new bridge it has built for this ramp to the remainder of the roadway leading to I-95 North. The ramp will be closed at 9 p.m. on Friday, September 25 and will reopen prior to the morning commute on Monday, September 28.
October 2: On the ramp from Route 1 (Elmwood Avenue) North to Route 10 North, the road will be restriped from one lane to two lanes. At the beginning of this ramp, drivers will need to choose a specific lane depending on their next destination after merging onto Route 10. Drivers seeking to use the on-ramp to I-95 North (Exit 1B) will need to use the right lane. Drivers seeking to stay on Route 10 North toward Providence or take Exit 1C for I-95 South will need to use the left lane. RIDOT will install additional signs and pavement markings to clearly show which lane drivers should use. This change will be in place until spring 2027.
These improvements are part of the I-95 15 Bridges project, which is removing 15 bridges from the state's backlog of poor and fair to poor condition bridges along I-95 and Route 10 between Providence and Warwick. Nine of the 15 bridges are structurally deficient. Three are rated among the top five most traveled structurally deficient bridges in Rhode Island.
