AG Lynch comment re: OHIC’s call for insurers to withdraw proposed health-plan rate hikes

Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch issued the following comment concerning State Health Commissioner Christopher Koller’s request today that Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island and UnitedHealthcare withdraw their proposed double-digit rate hikes as well as BCBX’s response to Koller that it would not do so:

“This is not a victory for the cause of controlling health insurance rates or health care costs; it’s just a pause in the action. As evidenced by Blue Cross & Blue Shield’s statement that it does not intend to withdraw its proposed rate filings, it seems possible if not likely that this matter will go to a rate hearing. Our office is preparing for this possibility. I look forward to having a full and fair opportunity to scrutinize these filings.”
