Tropical Storm Danny Update
RIEMA, State, and local officials are keeping a close eye on Danny as this storm could intensify somewhat or alter direction. As we warned last week, Mariners should be in port by late afternoon today and stay there until the storm passes. Swimmers should exercise extreme caution. There will be dangerous rip currents thru Sunday afternoon. Rain will be heavy at times, starting this afternoon thru Sunday , over all of Southern New England. We can expect anywhere from 2-5” with some areas receiving 3-6”.
The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency urges communities to prepare for it's arrival. RIEMA recommends communities which undergo nuisance flooding during wet weather events to take all necessary precautions such as cleaning out storm drains, culverts and catch basins. The Blackstone and Pawtuxet River Watersheds are expected to be the most highly impacted by localized urban flooding during the passing of Tropical Storm Danny.
RIEMA is also urging residents to know your community's flood evacuation routes, potential Public Shelters, and where to find high ground. In a flash flood, you may need to seek high ground on foot quickly. Be sure to test your sump pumps and if possible, have a backup power source. Make sure to install ‘check valves’ in sewer traps to prevent floodwater from backing up into the drains in your home. Lastly, ensure your home is ready. Where possible, minimize damage from basement flooding by elevating utilities and materials that could be damaged by limited basement flooding.
Contact your local Emergency Management office for more information on mitigation options to further reduce potential flood damage. Your local Emergency Management office may be able to provide additional resources and information regarding ways to reduce potential damage. RIEMA will monitor the Emergency Operations Center throughout the weekend.
