SMARTER BUYING PAYS OFF FOR TAXPAYERS State Receives $180,000 Rebate Check; Saves $1.8M Through June 2006

12-28-2005

The State of Rhode Island received a $180,065.46 rebate check this week and discounts totaling $1,504,185 during the past year from W.B. Mason Company, who was the successful bidder for the state’s office supply contract. Under the new multi-year contract, the state receives substantial discounts on office products, receives faster delivery and better service.

Governor Donald L. Carcieri’s Fiscal Fitness Program (an outgrowth of the Big Audit), in partnership with state employees, identified this contract as a potential for cost savings. The state estimates that the contract will save Rhode Island taxpayers an additional $1,877,535 through June 2006.

The successful vendor, W.B. Mason Company, employs 125 people at its 65,000 square foot facility in Cranston and is the only full service commercial office supply company with a physical presence in Rhode Island.

“We are fortunate to have a relationship with the State of Rhode Island that is a true partnership and a win-win for our company and the State,” said Bob Davis, Rhode Island President of WB Mason. “We look forward to continuing to deliver outstanding prices and service to the State and all of our customers.” The state has also realized substantial savings on other contracts, such as telecommunications, computer hardware, vehicles, copiers, janitorial supplies, and laboratory and medical supplies. In total, better purchasing has led to actual savings of $2,902,890. In addition, the state estimates that it will save an additional $4,038,264 through June of 2006.

The Governor’s Fiscal Fitness Team, in conjunction with the State Division of Purchasing, is continually working to identify potential savings when purchasing goods and services, in an effort to better utilize taxpayer dollars.

“Every dollar saved through smarter purchasing of goods and services results in a more efficient government for the taxpayer,” said Governor Carcieri. “Through an ongoing partnership between my Fiscal Fitness Team, the State Purchasing Division, and agency employees the State will continue to save millions of dollars. The magnitude of state’s purchasing power must be fully leveraged so that Rhode Island government receives the best price possible for the taxpayer.”
